4 Souvenirs Picked Up in April 1865 at the Fall of Richmond, Va.
Offered is a large 9 x 13 inch ledger page, blue in color with the heading, “Quartermaster General’s Office. Richmond, Va.” This sheet was “collected” by Union Quarter Master A. B. Lawrence of the 24th Army Corps and came from his scrapbook.
Attached to this page are 4 significant souvenirs.
- In the top right corner is a 1 inch round patriotic sticker with the words “Confederate States of America Aide Toi Dieu Taidera” surrounding a Confederate flag. This sticker is shown on page 442 in the book, Confederate States of America Catalog and handbook of Stamps and Postal History by Patricia A. Kaufmann. (Valued at $3,500 when used on a postal cover!)
- The first of 3 official covers. This one featuring yellow paper and a large patriotic medallion imprint of “Jeff Davis our first President” on the left side. It is addressed to “His Excellency Jefferson Davis Richmond, Va.” An example of this envelope is pictured on page 440 of Kaufmann’s book. D
- An envelope with the imprint, “Confederate States of America, President’s Office. (Official Business.)” It is pictured on page 391 in Kaufmann’s book. Written on the envelope in ink: “Envelope from Jefferson Davis’ Office”.
- An envelope with the imprint, “Confederate States of America, Treasury Department.” An example is shown on page 395 in Kaufmann’s book. Attached to this envelope is a large cut, actual signature “G. A. Trenholm, Secretary of the Treasury”. A photo copy of his autograph in “Autographs of the Confederacy” is provided to verify.
An amazing display of the fallen Confederate Government in Richmond. A. B. Lawrence was an avid collector! Condition is excellent with no fading.
