#A550

TWO “SOUVENIRS” FROM THE FALL OF PETERSBURG, VA. IN APRIL, 1865 – A JEFF DAVIS 5-CENT STAMP AND A RARE CONFEDERATE 20-CENT STAMP FEATURING THE IMAGE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON

This one and a half by 4 inch paper has written in original period ink at the top:

Rebel or so called, Confederate postage stamps.

On the left is a 5-cent blue Confederate stamp, and written above it “Jeff Davis.” On the right is a dark green 20-cent Confederate stamp with a portrait of George Washington. Isn’t it interesting that both the North and South wanted to claim Washington as one of their founding heroes?

At the bottom of the paper is written:  Obtained at Petersburg, Va., Apr. 1865.
