ONE OF THE FEW KNOWN COPIES OF THE NEWSPAPER “THE SWAMP ANGEL” ALONG WITH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH BY HAAS & PEALE

The enormous Union cannon named “The Swamp Angel” was installed on Morris Island, S. C. Its objective was to fire 150 lb. incendiary shells into Charleston. Her shells were specially made at West Point, N. Y. and were designed to disperse fire…called “Greek fire,” and burned down Charleston. Fortunately for the Confederates, “The Swamp Angel” exploded on its 36th shot into Charleston, thus ending what Charlestonians called “an act of inexcusable barbarity.”
