I.D. Disc from Gettysburg’s Famous 2nd United States Berdan’s Sharpshooters
While we have had I.D. Discs from literally hundreds of regiments who fought at Gettysburg, this is the first we have offered from Berdan’s 2nd regiment. At Gettysburg they fought under Major Homer R. Stoughton in Sickles 3rd Corps. The I.D. is brass and has a large head of Washington with “Union” on the front. Beautifully stamped on the reverse:
A. H. ROCK
U. S. S. S.
Alphonzo Howard Rock was a resident of Northfield, Vermont. On November 11th, 1861 he enlisted into Company E of the U.S. Volunteers 2nd Sharpshooters. This Army of the Potomac unit fought in all the major battles sustaining high casualties at the battle of Antietam, Gettysburg and the Wilderness. Rock was mustered out with the rest of his regiment on November 29th, 1864. The I.D. shows a beautiful mellow patina, not having been “polished up”. Be sure to see the video on the 2nd U. S. S. on the Gettysburg National Park website. A wonderful, scarce I.D.
