CDV of Charles E. Capehart, 1st West Virginia Cavalry – MOH Gettysburg – Signed in Ink on the Reverse.  Capehart was in Farnsworth’s Charge at Gettysburg, & Took Charge of the Regiment when Farnsworth was Killed

This CDV of Capehart shows a bust-view from the waist-up in uniform.  It is the same view as seen online.  The backmark is “Partridge’s Gallery, Wheeling, W. Va.”  On the reverse in nice dark ink Capehart signs:

“C. E. Capehart,
Lt. Col. 1st Va. Vet.
Cav., Philadelphia,
Pa.”

We will include a copy of Capehart’s official report of the roll 1st West Virginia played at Gettysburg and on July 4th near Emmitsburg.  “Capehart’s regiment charged down a mountainside at night during a thunderstorm, attacking and capturing a retreating Confederate wagon train.”  Capehart would go on to be promoted Lieut. Colonel on August 1st, 1864.  Interestingly, his brother General Henry Capehart was also awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Civil War.

The CDV has some faults including minor trimmed corners and some spotting.  Gettysburg Medal of Honor recipients are very desirable, and one being a member of Farnsworth’s charge, especially so.  The only example we have had (or seen) of Capehart.
