Nice Johnson’s Island POW Prison Item – Receipt for Money Sent to Captain William Dickerson Ervin, 62nd Virginia Infantry while a Prisoner there – He was Captured During the Gettysburg Campaign in McConnellsburg, Pa. 6/29/63
This small document measuring 3 ½ x 4 inches is headed, “JOHNSON’S ISLAND, NEAR SANDUSKY, O.” It is dated March 3rd, 1864. “Capt. W. D. Ervin, Prisoner of War” Below that, “Received by Brig. Genl. Terry $20” and is signed by Capt. Samuel Truesdell.
W. D. Ervin enlisted as Captain of Company P in the 62nd Virginia Infantry on December 3rd, 1862. He was taken prisoner during the Gettysburg Campaign being captured at McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania on June 29th, 1863. Database records show he was patrolled 5/27/65.
Brigadier General Terry is Henry Dwight Terry, who was sent to Johnson’s Island to take charge of the prison in January of 1864.
Captain Samuel Truesdell was commissioned into Company A of the 65th New York Infantry on July 1st, 1861 and transferred to Johnson’s Island in January 1864.
Documents from Johnson’s Island are very scarce and desirable.
