Touching ALS by John Taylor Wood, Commander of the CSS Tallahassee – The Tallahassee destroyed 26 vessels and captured 7 others. Wood originally served on the Iron Clad CSS Virginia & fought in the battle of Hampton Roads. Wood Commanded the Stern Pivot Gun during the battle & fired the shot that seriously wounded Lieutenant John L. Worden, Captain of the Monitor
This one-page letter in nice dark ink is written to Woods wife as he waited for orders allowing the Tennessee to depart. He had been waiting several weeks and in frustration captions this letter “C.S. Steamer “Let Her Be” Mouth of Cape Fear River July 11/64”. The book Autographs of the Confederacy lists Wood as a “Rare Autograph” and we have never seen a finer example of his autograph then the one on this ALS.
Truly an historic example that deserves display in the finest Confederate Naval collections. Condition is fine.
C. S. Steamer “Let Her Be”
Mouth of Cape Fear River
July 11 /64
My Darling Wife;
Disappointed again last night. We were underway going out when stopped by signals from shore, saying important dispatches were on their way from the President. We waited for these & then it was too late to go out. These delays have made me sick at heart, but it may be all for the best. I trust in a kind Providence that it is. I find that nearly all are opposed to our going out from the fact that the expedition has been so generally talked about, but I hardly think the Yankees have learned our destination. If we do not get out this evening, we must give it up for the moon will be too full.
My own precious wife, you know I love you & will do all for the best or try & do so. I will hurry back. Kiss our sweet babies.
Your own devoted &
Affectionate Husband,
J. Taylor Wood
