One of Our Finest Pieces of Confederate Postal History – POW Cover from Lieut. James B. Miller Co. A 18th Virginia Regiment – Shot 3 Times in Pickett’s Charge & Dies from his Wounds in Prison
At the top of this cover in nice dark ink is written, “From Lieut. Jas. B. Miller Co. A, 18th Va. Regt. Confederate Soldier”. There is a RICHMOND, VA. AUG. 25, 1863 postmark with DUE 10. The cover is addressed to Miller’s father in “Green Hill P.O., Campbell County, Va.” On the left side of the envelope “Examined & Approved Ebn. Swift.
Surgeon Ebenezer Swift examined the outgoing mail at Chester Hospital Prison in Pennsylvania following the battle of Gettysburg in August-September 1863. This wonderful example in fine condition with minor staining and wear sold at Robert Siegel Auction in New York 19 years ago for $1,850.
For the Gettysburg collector the 18th Virginia which was in Garnett’s Brigade was one of the most famous Confederate regiments.
