Magnificent Hand Drawn Picture of Johnson’s Island Prisoner of War Camp for Confederate Officers – Drawn by Topographical Engineer G. W. Melvin of the 9th Louisiana Regiment
This drawing was taken out of a prisoner of war autograph album. Over the years we have seen several hand-drawings from Johnson’s Island off the coast of Sandusky, Ohio… but none with the intricate detail of this one. We have noted one other example from the work of G. W. Melvin which was in a museum.
It is amazing to us how anyone could draw such fine detail. The drawing measures 7 ½ x 4 ½ inches. It is still mounted on the 5 x 7 ½ inch page from the album. Condition is excellent with no fading. Should one feel inclined we know that the museum on Johnson’s Island would love to have this in their collection. This drawing could easily be enlarged to say possibly 8 x 10 inches and copies sold to collectors. One of the favorite items in our lifetime collection.
