Large 8 x 10 Photo of Soldier’s Names Carved on the Wall of Libby Prison
LIBBY PRISON: SOLDIER’S INITIALS CARVED INTO THE WALLS: Original photograph published by Taylor & Huntington from a glass negative taken in 1865 after the surrender of Richmond. This section includes the initials of Asa B. Isham and George W. Hill of the famous 7th Michigan Cavalry, part of Custer’s Michigan cavalry brigade. Isham and Hill were both captured at Yellow Tavern May 11, 1864, a battle in which the legendary Jeb Stuart was killed. Isham was exchanged in December 1864, Hill was exchanged in March 1865. Taylor and Huntington purchased original glass negatives from the studios of Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner and sold images from the original negatives to subscribers in the late 1880’s.
