Palmetto Guard P. P. Gaillard Seeks Permission to Join the Palmetto Guard in Kershaw’s Regiment in Virginia
This lot consists of two pages. The first a letter from P. P. Gaillard, Sumter Court House, South Carolina to Governor Pickens of South Carolina. He seeks to join his regiment which is at Camp Beauregard, Bull Run, Virginia.
The second pieces are copies of orders that Gaillard received from the Palmetto Guard indicating that he needed the Governors approval to proceed. The copies were made and signed by Samuel Porcher Gaillard, his father. Samuel’s Plantation Journals, an important South Carolina archive were published in 1985.
Both pieces are on legal size blue paper. On the back of the second page Governor Francis W. Pickens has written a short note authorizing Gaillard’s request. Condition of both pieces is excellent. A nice addition for the Palmetto Guard collector!
