Confederate Soldier’s Letter – 62nd Tennessee Infantry – President Davis, Senator Cobb, Governor Harris and General Hood all made speeches to us

This 3-page letter in nice dark ink is headed, “Palmetto, Georgia, September 28th, 1864”. William Hooper, Company C, of the 62nd Tennessee Infantry is writing home. We have had several of his letters. He is a good writer and this one has especially interesting content.

Will first mentions that Hood is above Palmetto on the Montgomery & Atlanta Rail Road. He then goes on to state, “President Davis left here last evening having stayed two or three days with us. He made us two speeches whilst here, encouraging and reviving the troops. He spoke at some length recounting our many hardships, fatiguing marches as victories and defeats and the bright future that awaited us if faithful only a short time yet. Senator Cobb of Georgia, Gov. Harris of Tenn., and Genl. Hood also made speeches all intimating that we would soon march into middle Tenn. The supposition is that we will go by way of Blue Mountain and Gadsden.”

Will concludes the letter by asking, “If Lucy and Harriett have been brought back and if so, how they are doing?” (No doubt his slaves that were hired out)

The letter is written on the typical brown Confederate paper and is in fine condition with only minor staining.
