Camp of 1st Regt. Cavalry
Fairfax C. H. July 31st
Dear Cousin Robert,
I take this opportunity to write you a few lines to ask, if you would be so kind, as to get me the appointment of “Drill Master” of Infantry in the C. S. Army. I have annexed myself to Stuart’s Cavalry, until you can get the appointment for me. My name, I expect, was not put down on the list of Cadet’s hand by Col. Gilham to Pres. Davis, as I was at Harper’s Ferry. Please excuse this letter, as my accommodations are awful. Mother sends best love to you & yours. When you write, please give my best love to all & believe me ever your affectionate cousin.
H. L. D. Lewis
To:
Gen. R. E. Lee
Richmond, VA.
The letter is written in nice dark ink, and is one-page frameable. A very significant letter to General Robert E. Lee from a man who rode with Stuart. Condition is excellent.
