Blockade Runner Bond – Palmetto Exporting and Importing Company of South Carolina – Signed by Famous Charlestonian William Ravenel June 3rd, 1863
This bond for five $1,000 shares is made out to Johnston Crews & Co. During the Civil War Blockade Runners would take loads of cotton from the South to England. There they would load up half a load of profit-making items and half a load of equipment for the Confederacy (at least that was the usual arrangement). There are many books written about the exploits of these blockade runners.
One of the fascinating things about the President of the Palmetto Importing and Exporting Company, William Ravenel, is that his home at 13 East Battery in Charleston, S.C. is that his home is one of the famous homes in Charleston that can be toured.
As one of the dozen plus blockade running operations the Palmetto Exporting and Exporting is quite a scarce find. Our example measuring 6 ½ x 4 ½ inches is in excellent condition.
