Out of a Soldier’s Scrapbook, a Curious Front of a CS Patriotic Envelope – Addressed “Genl. R. E. Lee, Richmond, Va.”
This piece of brown Confederate paper measures 3 ¾ x 3 inches. The imprint shows a 11 star Confederate flag with the patriotic verse, “Gather around your country’s flag, Men of the South the hour has come – None may falter, none may lag – March to the sound of the fife and drum.” The address “Genl. R. E. Lee Richmond, Va.” is in period ink, definitely not added later. Again, this is only the partial front of the envelope. It has been cut out of the scrapbook and is still mounted… no attempt to take off. It is Confederate and it is real.
